The Erik Foundation Programs

TEF Transportation Assistance Program

Addresses the needs of veterans in supporting transportation, both for daily needs as well as for medical assistance and other periodic appointments or services.

The initial program we intend to implement in this arena is an on-demand door-to-door service using Uber® and Lyft®. This service will provide maximum benefit to the recipient at a reasonable cost. This service is appropriate when traditional subsidized or unsubsidized transportation options are limited or non-existent, such as after-hours transport, transport across political boundaries or transport to/from unserviced addresses. This approach has been successful at the VAMC in Philadelphia and our funding would allow for expansion at the Philadelphia VAMC and allow us to port the approach out to Chester, Montgomery, and other nearby counties. The VAMC tended to use this approach for cancer patients who need rides after therapy sessions and the traditional forms of transport are arduously long or uncomfortable. An added benefit of this approach would be the ability to capture data about the areas commonly serviced and to better identify where services are required.

We will partner with established providers like Uber® and Lyft® for assistance in transportation and eliminate the significant transportation gap that exists for people in need of many forms of assistance. Although there are existing avenues through which people can receive assistance, many of these avenues are closed if the intended beneficiaries cannot take advantage of them due to a lack of accessible transportation. Affordable and accessible transportation is a key element in obtaining the benefit from many of these support services.

Our first step is to start in Pennsylvania and offer transportation for our veterans to VA- based medical services in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh areas.

TEF Medical Assistance Program

We will have working and funding relationships with physicians and non-profit organizations that support and offer traditional and integrative care for veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, depression and other chronic illnesses.

A $10,000 donation can provide therapy for 16 veterans for one month or could fund an entire year of appointment-based rehabilitative care, including prescriptions and physician care for a single veteran.

TEF Housing Assistance Program

We intend to provide housing services for our beneficiaries. As funding allows, we wish to purchase properties in southern Chester County, where costs are low. Until funding is large enough for these purchases, we intend to partner with existing providers of benefits to help subsidize housing for homeless (or near-homeless) veterans and others. With several beneficiaries housed in the same area, the opportunities for cost-efficient transportation to medical care and schooling are great with enough forethought and planning.

Another intended partner organization specializes in getting veterans and their families established into housing. This program is for situations where some potential for income exists, but the recipients require an initial stake or subsidy to get a stable housing situation established.

Annual estimates for the cost of this program range from $2500 – $5,000 for a single veteran up to $5,000 – $10,000 for a family of four or five.
There is a local charity that provides a housing subsidy for a veteran’s family during the time a veteran is undergoing critical medical care and/or rehabilitation. The cost of this program is $10 per evening, for up to two years.

TEF Future Programs

Until funding allows us to implement our goal of campus-based housing and medical services, The Erik Foundation will continue to research and identify gaps in current programs and offerings. We want to find ways to supplement and support existing services as opposed to offer duplicate services. Generally, the people offering these services are well-aware of where the gaps in their programs exist and are very willing to discuss how they might be addressed. As we develop relationships, we become more able to see potential service gaps and partner desired solutions.
